Give Your Bathroom a Deep Clean

Weekends spent doing home improvements are now all the rage as people make the most of their homes. However we think treating your home to a deep clean can have a similarly big impact. Bathrooms can often set the tone for the cleanliness of your home. So whether you are preparing for visitors or want to refresh your home for the coming months it's worth the effort. Get your bathroom ready to sparkle by treating it to a extensive deep clean. Here are just a few of our deep cleaning tips to brighten up your bathroom suite this year.

Handy Deep Cleaning Tips:

1. Use household ingredients for healthy cleaning

There are plenty of ways to clean your bathroom without using harsh chemicals. White vinegar and lemon juice are both acidic items so when combined with baking soda, they will create a fizzing chemical reaction. This bubbliness will help to clean away stains and clear limescale. So a mixture of one spoonful of baking soda for each half-cup of vinegar or lemon will be perfect for pouring down the loo to clean stains. This can also be used to tackle limescale in the bath, sink or around the taps. If the solution slides off your taps too easily, a good tip is to soak a sponge in the solution and then use an elastic band to hold the sponge around the spout of the tap for an hour or two, which will soften the limescale and make it much easier to remove.

2. Clean the things that clean you

You rely on the bath or the shower to clean yourself, so you’ll want to make sure there isn’t any dirt or debris affecting the cleanliness of the water you’re using. It’s a good idea to scrub the bath with the lemon-and-baking-soda solution above and clean the showerhead. You can do this by removing the showerhead and soaking in a solution of boiling water and white vinegar. Leave it for as long as possible – preferably overnight – before tackling with an old toothbrush to get into all the holes. Reattach the showerhead and allow very hot water to flow through the shower. This will clear out any dirt or limescale that has been dislodged by the soaking and scrubbing process.

3. When I’m cleaning windows

Cleaning glass can be tricky, wherever it is in your home. However, it is essential for keeping your surroundings clean and looking bright. Shower enclosures, glass cabinets and mirrors can all benefit from the same treatment you give to your windows. So mix up a solution of white vinegar and water in an empty spray bottle and spritz all over any glass or mirrored surfaces in your home before wiping over with a lint-free cloth to whisk away any marks or smears. The resulting shine and reflections will let the light in and bounce it around brightening up your space.

These deep cleaning tips will give your bathroom a new lease of life so you can put those bathroom renovations on hold! Sometimes facing the task of a deep clean can seem a little daunting. Follow our handy guide to help you approach the clean methodically to achieve the best results:

How to Approach your Bathroom Deep Clean:

1.Empty the Bathroom

A good starting point is to clear your bathroom of all the mobile accessories such as the laundry bin, scales, toothbrush holder and any bathroom extras such as toilet rolls. It is also useful to empty the bin and remove any finished bottles, toothpaste etc to start with a blank canvas. Remove any bath mats or towels and pop them in the wash before you begin. This first step ensures that you are left with the bare bones of your bathroom suite to attack!

2.Start the Cleanse

It is worth spraying your entire suite with your chosen cleaning products so that it has a chance to soak. This means any stubborn stains or spots should be easier to remove. It is also worth popping a bit of bleach around the rim of your toilet to allow it to soak. A handy tip is to place your toilet brush in the bowl too to help thoroughly clean the brush end. This is often neglected yet can harbour a large amount of bacteria in your bathroom. It is also worth pouring drain unblocker down any plug holes to ensure that your waste water will drain more efficiently helping to keep your suite items more hygienic.

3.Pay Attention to Glass Areas

Whilst your suite is soaking take to any glass areas in your bathroom and give them a good polish. This can include your mirror, any mirrored cabinets and of course the dreaded bath or shower panels which can get pretty grimy. Make sure you don't neglect window areas as these can be prone to mould especially in bathrooms with poor ventilation. Clean glass can really make a big difference in your bathroom as it helps to reflect any natural light around your bathroom.

4.Set to work on the Bathroom Suite

You can choose to carry this out in any order at all but it's worth leaving the toilet till last. It is more hygienic to to use different cloths/sponges for this. Whether you have a bath or a shower or both these larger items will take more time so are a good starting point whilst you are motivated to start! Give them a good scrub in and out making sure you rinse plenty of hot water down the plug hole. This will ensure the drain unblocker rinses through. Once these larger items are done move on to your basin giving it a similarly good scrub all round and rinsing through the plug hole to wash away any blockages.

5.Time to attack the Toilet

Probably the most important part of your deep clean is to ensure that the toilet gets a really thorough clean. The toilet is a mine of bacteria which it is important to keep on top of. Once you have cleaned the toilet use the flush to rinse through the toilet brush. Add a toilet fragrance to help keep it fresh and hygienic.

Many modern chrome designs can really gleam and make a big difference to the overall appeal of your bathroom. Giving them a good polish can make them look like new. You will be pleased you took the time to pay attention to detail. Also you may also need to wipe down your towel rail or radiator to ensure no stone is left unturned.

Nearly there with your clean and time to wipe your floor. It can be worth giving the floor a good sweeping first dependent on the type of flooring you have in your bathroom. Do your best cinderella impression and scrub that floor until you can see your face in it! Work from the back of the bathroom to the door so that you can keep it as clean as possible. It will also allow for it to dry without smudging your hard work.
